Proof; Circus

Postby Stupy on Thu Jul 30, 2009 8:17 am

This came through on the Liberation Records mailing list yesterday... Woot =)

Proof

Not Drowning, Waving's soundtrack to the hit 1991 Jocelyn Moorhouse film Proof starring Hugo Weaving won the 1992 ARIA Award for best Independent Release, and is a perfect example of the way their unique soundscapes translate to the world of film.

Out of print for a long time, this remastered edition is sure to be snapped up by collectors.

Available in store and online from 28th August.

Circus

At their best, on about half the thirteen songs here, such as Albert Namatjira, Walk Me Home and especially The Migrant, Not Drowning, Waving create a fantastic sound from elements of folk and world music melded with an ever-building musical and lyrical tension that suggests an Australian answer to U2's best work.

When they're not at their best, they're still incredibly interesting and eminently listenable, which is not a bad rest stop to choose. Features the hit single Spark.

Available in store and online from 28th August.

Say... does anyone know... it mentioned Proof is remastered but no mention about Circus... has anything changed with this release of Circus?

Hi all, still have no idea if Circus is remastered or not but have ordered it anyway; suppose I will sell the old copy on e-bay or something.

What I am wondering now is... are these in stores anyway? They don't appear here in Queensland yet.

Regards

I didn't see them in my local JB HiFi when I was in there on Saturday and the purchasing there is done by a contributor to this forum, so I would have thought that if they were in any shops, they would be there.

I shall keep my ear to the gorund . . .

The Not Drowning Waving Facebook page has answered the original question and provides an update on the status of the CD's:

"The newly remaster version of Not Drowning, Waving's last studio album, Circus, is now available on the Australian iTunes Music Store... A physical release, with brand-spanking new artwork is being prepared for release shortly."

"The newly remastered version of Proof is now available from the Australian iTunes Music Store. The physical CD version is slightly delayed - more news when we get it."

Circus has new and very striking artwork utilising a (for some) disturbing cover image which had been mooted for the original but chucked out for some reason. It's all round a much more attractive package than the original. As for remastering, I don't believe it has been, and there are no extra tracks.

I'm not sure what Liberation means by "not at their best" - they can get fucked quite comprehensively with that comment as far as I'm concerned. The album is brilliant and I'm almost certain at the time carried a personal endorsement from Peter Gabriel. Some absolute musical marvels within. "Magician" is by far one of their finest moments, and that's just to name one of many on it.

I haven't seen anything relating to Proof and didn't even know it was being re-released.

Cheers

Yo

Have these appeared in stores anywhere?

I've had mine on order for ages; the release date seemed to have been put back to either last Friday or Monday (yesterday) depending on where you are reading... still waiting in Brisbane though...

Latest material indicates there has been remastering, but I suppose the effect will not be too noticable, given it's a more recent CD...?

I think the main issue with Circus as an album is that the move to the mainstream put them in a different field. It remains an excellent album, but it's does not stand out from the ordinary as much as Claim or Tabaran. Albert Namatjira, Parish Pump and The Migrant remain favourites...

Proof and Circus are now available at retail...

Proof at JB Hi-Fi
This version is a Digipak just like the original.

The new artwork on the Circus reissue is much nicer than the original version and comes with a slipcase like the other reissues.
