Vines gig ties up musos in Mornington

MY Friend the Chocolate Cake and Stephen Cummings and his band headline this year’s Summer in the Vines at Morning Star Estate.

Cummings was lead singer with ‘70s pop band The Sports, whose hits included the classic Who Listens to the Radio? Since going solo after the band folded, he has released 20 albums and performed with the who’s who of Australian pop and rock music.

He is also a published author.

His latest book Will It Be Funny Tomorrow Billy? is a “caustic collection of misadventures” - among them his Countdown days, “spectacular clashes with music industry suits” and being humiliated in front of Mick Jagger in New York.

As their name suggests, ARIA award-winning My Friend the Chocolate Cake defy easy description, playing anything from chamber music to acoustic pop to “hell-raising instrumental shenanigans”. Anything but dull.

Also on the Morning Star stage will be peninsula singer-songwriter Meg O’Riley and Mark Andrew channelling Elvis and Tom Jones.

With the annual fundraiser for Oz Child taking place on Valentine’s Day (February 14) this year, couples can enjoy a romantic picnic in the roses between noon and 2pm, before the entertainment starts.

The rest of the day is for all the family, with face painting, jumping castle, sand art and Silvermist the stilt-walking fairy keeping the kids entertained while parents enjoy the live music from 2-7.30pm.

Oz Child helps children affected by violence, abuse, family breakdown, depression and mental illness. It provides foster care, child and family support, youth pathways, disability care and outreach services.

Tickets for the event are $75 family, $35 adults and children over eight years $12. Bookings: hotel@morningstarestate.com.au or phone 9787 7760.
